Researchers pinpoint a prime age for marriage

Those who want the lowest odds of divorce may find themselves wondering when they should get married. Maybe you've heard that people wait longer than ever to tie the knot these days. Does that have anything to do with the divorce rates?

It does, but only in the sense that many marriages at an "older" age -- at least when compared to previous generations -- tend to last longer. According to researchers, you are best off to get married from 28 years old to 32 years old.

This study does actually turn some notions of marriage on their head, or it at least adjusts them for modern times. For a while now, experts have known that young marriages tend to be very unstable and often lead to divorce -- just like dating in high school or college. This is why many recommend never getting married in your teens.

However, they usually thought that there wasn't another end to the spectrum. They just assumed that waiting to tie the knot helped the marriage last. What this new research shows is that there is an end date. If you wait until after you are 32 years old, your divorce odds actually start increasing again.

The issue isn't immaturity or a lack of stability, as it is at younger ages, but just adjustment. The longer you go without getting married, the more you adjust to it, and suddenly adjusting to a new living situation at 35 or 40 can be very hard.

Regardless of your age, if you get divorced, be sure you understand all of your legal rights.
