Can you increase the speed at which your BAC declines?

On Behalf of | Dec 8, 2025 | DWI Defense

Blood alcohol concentration is an important part of a DWI arrest. It is possible to be arrested on DWI charges even if you do not break the legal limit, such as if you admit to drinking and the officers can provide other evidence of impairment. But if your BAC reaches or exceeds the legal limit, which is 0.08% for most drivers, that will likely trigger a DWI arrest and your BAC can be used against you in a potential court case.

As such, you may be interested in ways to reduce your BAC quickly. If you have had too much to drink and you need to drive home, you want your BAC to decline so that you will not be arrested. Is there anything you can do to make it drop more quickly?

The rate is fairly consistent

The reality is that you typically cannot reduce your BAC any faster than your standard alcohol metabolism rate of 0.015% per hour. It can take hours to go from an elevated BAC back down to zero. For some people, they could even sleep the entire night and still register a positive BAC on a breath test the following morning.

People do try various tactics to decrease their BAC more quickly, such as taking a cold shower, eating a meal, drinking a cup of coffee, or drinking a glass of water. These things may help you feel less intoxicated and more awake, but your BAC will still be relatively the same. As such, these are not viable ways to avoid a DWI arrest.

Your defense options

If you have been arrested on drunk driving charges this year, it is important to know what legal defense options you have, as a conviction could lead to jail time, fines, a license suspension and more. Legal guidance is essential.
